Gabrielle Poitras is a multi-media artist who grew up in lush British Columbia, Canada. She moved to the UK when she was 23. As a multi-media artist, she works with textiles, painting and printmaking. She uses both the visual language of the natural world and cartoons to make others feel a sense of connection to the natural world, themselves and to others in the current turbulent world we live in.

Her use of textiles evokes the human, natural and domestic realm. It's softness is a symbol of comfort and stability that she uses to explore mental unease and escapism; the soft body of the textile mirrors tender emotional states. Through the process of creating soft work, there is a strong sense of comfort and dissociation from the harsh reality of today's world.

Her prints and paintings are more traditional and have gestural loose marks mixed with representational imagery, speaking towards the day dream like world she is trying to achieve.

Her work evokes pathos, and depending on the work anxiety or peace. She often uses cuteness for its disguisable tendencies of darker themes. Cuteness draws in the viewer, Lowering their defences to either empathize with the cute creature or to question the motives of the piece. Themes of power dynamics between the natural world and person vs self are explored in her work through cuteness.

Gabrielle's work is often inspired by emotions and events in her personal life at the time of creation. Through exploring personal struggles in her artwork, she hopes that it brings a sense of connection or a feeling of belonging to her audience. That, through the turmoil of life, there is still joy in life to be found, and life worth living.
